There is a full page ad in Arabella Art Magazine for the Walks of Life Exhibition and it caught the eye of Mural Mosaic. MM organized and installed the Kunamokst mural at the Vancouver Winter Olympics (Robert Bateman did a tile for this mural) and they have done many others.
They asked if I would paint a tile for the mural that will be installed at the Canada Summer Games this summer in Sherbrooke, Quebec. When I saw how beautiful these murals are and how engaging they are to look at because a large image is born out of tens of smaller images, I was on board. Complexity, bring it on!
The theme obviously is sport. So then came the question, what will I paint on the tile they’re sending me? I don’t want to paint a famous athlete and get into a copyright issue. A couple of days passed and I was laying in bed waiting for dreamland to come when I thought of an image I had seen.
My husband Al, was a referee, and past President of the Canadian Power Lifting Union but before these roles he was a BC power lifting champion in the ’80s. We have some mighty good competition photos so I’m thinking that’s what I’ll paint. I think honouring people for their accomplishments is really important and having the chance to place him in peak form into the world of sport, visually, is a nice thing to do for my Huz.
So when the tile arrives I’ll post the progress for you.
I’m really excited to see how it will look when placed among more than 100 other tiles from more than 100 others artists and what the final big image will be, even we artists aren’t allowed in on the secret!
